Each summer, the Tennessee Smoky Mountains come alive with fun and frolic. Bring the entire family to these majestic mountains to enjoy magical experiences like these.
Synchronous Fireflies Viewing, Early June, 2025
Have you heard of Photinus carolinus? That's the scientific name for a rare firefly species that stages a spectacular nighttime show – flashing in synchronized unison – during its annual mating ritual in late May and early June.
These insect luminaries exist in only a few places on earth. And the largest population in the Western Hemisphere just happens to hang out near the Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
In years gone by, the firefly viewing experience was open to anyone who nabbed a nearby parking spot at showtime. The result was a mob scene and a free-for-all. So now the National Park Service uses a lottery system to regulate attendance. Apply by Monday, April 29, at www.recreation.gov to enter the vehicle-reservation lottery. You'll be notified of the results by mid-May. If you're selected, you and your family can enjoy the synchronous spectacle from the comfort of your own vehicle on your designated date (between June 3 and 10).
Love authentic handcrafted quilts? Come see hundreds of these colorful masterworks on eye-popping display during A Mountain Quiltfest at the LeConte Center, 2986 Teaster Lane, Pigeon Forge. Scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, June 10 through 12, this annual event will also host premium vendors offering quilting supplies and accessories. And, if you managed to register by March 26, you can take exclusive quilting classes, too.
Would your kids love to master angling? Have them apply by May 15 for a space in the 2025 John Thurman Trout Adventure Camp.

Geared toward boys and girls ages 12-14, the camp takes place at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT), 9275 Tremont Road, Townsend, Tennessee.
If your kids are admitted, they'll learn firsthand how to:
