Enjoy a Downhome Thanksgiving in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains

Posted by Jon Hoffman in Things To Do

Ready to try something different for Thanksgiving Weekend 2019? Come to the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge area in Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains.

Whether you dine at a local restaurant, order delicious takeout, or cook up your own tasty feast, you'll get to savor an authentic Appalachian holiday here amid breathtaking scenery.

Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner at a Fabled Smokies Eatery

Need a break from cooking and cleaning up afterward? Many Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge restaurants serve scrumptious holiday fare on Thanksgiving Day. Choose from these famous eateries and more:

  1. The Old Mill Restaurant (164 Old Mill Avenue, Pigeon Forge): Nestled next to an 1830 grist mill – still in operation today – this beloved historic restaurant is known for its Southern "comfort food." Drop by Thanksgiving Day between 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. to chow down on a special feast featuring tender roast turkey with dressing, juicy prime rib of beef, succulent sugar-cured ham, Southern-style chowder and fritters, pumpkin pie, and more.

When you're all finished feasting, you can shop for authentic Old Mill dinner ingredients at the Old Mill Farmhouse Kitchen; purchase freshly milled grits and meal at the Old Mill General Store; satisfy your sweet tooth at the Old Mill Candy Kitchen; and browse for artisanal bakeware, dinnerware, and decorative pieces at Old Mill Pigeon River Pottery.

  2. Mama's Farmhouse (208 Pickel Street, Pigeon Forge): For Thanksgiving, this legendary eatery offers a huge family-pleasing spread, featuring premium turkey and ham, savory cornbread stuffing, plus your choice of sides and desserts.

Or, if you like, you can order from the regular menu, which has everything from award-winning crispy fried chicken to mouthwatering meatloaf and catfish. All meals are served family-style, accompanied by Mama's award-winning buttermilk biscuits.

  3. Seasons of Ober (Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort, 1339 Ski Mountain Road, Gatlinburg): Prefer a more elevated dining experience? (And by "elevated," we mean "nearly 3,000 feet above sea level"!) Board the downtown tram to ascend to Ober Gatlinburg, where you can sample a scrumptious Thanksgiving Day buffet between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Seasons of Ober Restaurant. If possible, reserve a window table for an amazing view of the Smokies.

Feast in Peace and Privacy in Your Volunteer Cabin Rental

Prefer a leisurely Thanksgiving meal in the comfort of your Smoky Mountains cabin? You're in luck. Several area restaurants offer special Thanksgiving takeout.

Bennett's Pitt BBQ, for example, provides a full take-home feast – 12-lb. roasted turkey, four quarts of mashed potatoes, two pints of creamy gravy, four quarts of seasoned dressing, four quarts of vegetables (your choice), 15 rolls, plus two pumpkin pies – all for just $100 ($115 if you choose a 15-lb. turkey). Simply place your order a few days beforehand, then pick it up between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day onsite at 2910 Parkway, Pigeon Forge.

Of course, you can also opt to fix your own Thanksgiving dinner right in your rental cabin. Most cabins come equipped with a full gourmet kitchen, including cookware, dinnerware, and serving utensils.
