3 Things to Look for in the Smokies During 2022

Posted by Jon Hoffman in Things To Do

There's always something new to see and do in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains. And, for 2022, that's even truer than ever. From thrilling new rides to expanded attractions, you'll find plenty to enjoy and explore in the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge area.

New additions at Soak Mountain

New First-of-Its-Kind Coaster at Soaky Mountain Water Park

What do you get when you combine a world-famous uphill water coaster – the MasterBlaster – with an even more legendary multi-sensation water slide – the Boomerango – and then double the slides for a dueling race to the finish?

You get The Edge, a heart-pounding new water coaster coming to Soaky Mountain Waterpark at 175 Gists Creek Road in Sevierville.

Designed by Whitewater, the company that developed both MasterBlaster and Boomerango, this exciting new ride will take you and your family on an unforgettable trip featuring luminous light shows, sudden steep drops, dramatic climbs, feelings of weightlessness, illusions of mega-speed, and the sensation that you're literally going "over the edge."

Along the way, as you hurtle through twisting tubes, you'll be surrounded by dazzling AquaLucent rings and stripes – a kaleidoscope of eye-popping lights and colors. And, as you race to the finish on dueling tracks, you'll ride over a zero-G hump, then encounter still more spectacular effects signaling the winner of the race.

Season passes are already on sale for this showstopping new 2022 coaster, so go online to order yours soon.

Winterfest still going strong

WinterFest Continues with a Whole New Glow

Smoky Mountains WinterFest actually began on November 11, 2021, with the official lighting of more than 5 million spectacular LED displays throughout the Tennessee Smokies. But this fabulous festive light show continues throughout January 2022 and even extends into mid to late February in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

After the Christmas holidays, though, the focus is more on seasonal fun, as the nighttime landscape transforms into a magical winter wonderland. Take a leisurely drive along the Parkway and environs to savor countless sparkling lights and awesome, elaborate displays.

Dollywood Adds Even More Excitement

Dollywood's 2022 season won't start until March 21, but plans are already underway for new family-friendly delights.

Look for more drones this summer at Dollywood.

Be on the lookout for:

  • Amazing new Mosiaculture displays (larger-than-life floral sculptures) at the popular Flower and Food Festival, which runs from April 22 through June 5
  • Spectacular new additions to the Sweet Summer Nights Drone and Fireworks Show (June 18-August 7), where even more drones – setting off even more fireworks – will create a magnificent multi-sensory light show high above Pigeon Forge
  • Hoot Owl Hollow, a colorful new owl-themed display in Dollywood's Craftsman Valley, slated to launch during the annual Harvest Festival (September 23-October 29)

In addition, Dollywood is upgrading its season-pass structure to offer even more perks and privileges. Along with the pricing tiers already available, you'll be able to choose from:

  • The Silver Season Pass ($139 and up), offering unlimited visits and 2 Bring-a-Friend Free tickets
